Step into the role of Atreyu, from Michael Ende's novel The Neverending Story, and explore six fantastical worlds in a search for the magical Auryn. The arcade-style first-person gameplay features 3D landscapes that allow total freedom of movement within levels. To enter the first five worlds, you must collect at least five yellow energy balls in each, beginning with the Mountain of Destiny. Once a world has been entered, you can go back to it to finish the quest for all ten energy balls, a prerequisite for gaining entry into the sixth and final world, The Labyrinth of Time.
Each world has specific challenges, explained by its main character. Find three brothers to open a gate in the Mountain of Destiny, repair a machine in Gaya's Lava Dungeon, and find a door lever in Singing Tree Country. In The Wandering Mountain, you must find your way through the gears of Urwerk, then climb to the top of the mountain before reaching the Oracle, the fifth world, where you'll be judged on your progress. Without all 50 energy balls, you'll have to return to each level to find those you initially missed.
In the final level, The Labyrinth of Time, you must find a total of 50 auryns, of which only one is the true artifact. The game is saved in-level at checkpoints, where Atreyu is resurrected should death occur, and automatic game saves occur upon completion of each world. Only by finding and returning the Auryn to Fantasia's ruler can the land be saved from total devastation by The Nothing and restored to its former glory. ~ Michael L. House, All Game Guide
