Reeling from recent losses in world competition basketball, the United States struck back when NBA superstars such as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird became eligible to play in the 1992 Olympics. Proving once and for all that the U.S. is home of the best basketball players in the world, the so-called Dream Team easily trounced the competition. To commemorate this occasion (and make a few bucks in the process), Electronic Arts, creators of such critically acclaimed hockey titles as NHL Hockey and NHLPA Hockey '93, released Team USA Basketball for the Sega Genesis. Featuring 14 countries represented by 168 of the world's best hoopsters, including 18 from the NBA, one or two players can compete in exhibition or tournament action. Twenty-three of the players (including all of the Americans) have marquee shots, such as Scottie Pippen's Around the World and Charles Barkley's Monster Dunk. Each game is played according to the rules of international basketball, which vary slightly from NBA play. For example, the shot clock is 30 seconds instead of 24, and the game is divided into two twenty-minute halves instead of four twelve-minute periods. Options and features in this game which are universally accepted include time outs, substitutions, game and season statistics, offensive and defensive fouls, turnovers, steals, back court violations, inbound violations, blocked shots, jump shots, passing, dribbling, and slam dunks. ~ Brett Alan Weiss, All Game Guide
